Custom Build and Self Build share a common definition in UK legislation, but occupy different ends of the same spectrum. Individual projects can sit anywhere along the spectrum, but generally those regarded as Self Build projects are more “hands on”, whereas Custom Builders are more likely to commission a home to their own design and specification.
English Rural recognizes our villages require a range of homes and those planning for their neighbourhood often wish to see different solutions to meet the varied needs from their communities, whether that be from newly emerging households or from those looking to downsize to something more modern and energy efficient.
Allied to our rural exception projects, English Rural has begun to include serviced building plots, for sale to local people who wish to build their own home. These market orientated developments provide a direct subsidy to the affordable homes within the village.
