Celebrating Our Special Recognition at the Kent Housing Group Excellence Awards

We are delighted to announce that English Rural, in partnership with the Shepherdswell with Coldred Community Land Trust (CLT), has been honoured with a Special Recognition Award at the prestigious Kent Housing Group Excellence Awards.

This accolade recognises our collaborative efforts in delivering ten new affordable homes for rent at Carpenters Yard in Shepherdswell—the first community land trust project of its kind in Kent. This pioneering initiative not only provides much-needed housing for local residents but also sets a precedent for other parish councils and community-led groups aiming to address rural housing needs.

A Milestone for Rural Communities

The Carpenters Yard development is a testament to what can be achieved when housing associations and local communities work together. By forming a partnership with the Shepherdswell with Coldred CLT, we have ensured that these homes remain affordable and prioritised for people with a genuine connection to the area. This approach helps preserve the unique character of rural villages and supports sustainable community growth.

Recognition from the Kent Housing Group

The Kent Housing Group Excellence Awards are renowned for celebrating the very best in the county’s housing sector. Brian Horton, Chair of the Kent Housing Group, emphasised the passion and dedication within the industry, stating:

“These awards are always special. Over the years, the judging panel has been touched by the passion and purpose behind the vital contributions colleagues in housing are making in Kent. The ideas, the innovation and the vision that are demonstrated illustrate the caring side of housing and the drive we have to make a difference.”

Being acknowledged in this way reinforces the importance of community-led housing solutions, especially in addressing the unique challenges faced by rural areas.

The Role of the Rural and Community Housing Enabling Service (RACE)

Our project has been supported by the Rural and Community Housing Enabling service (RACE), established by the Kent Housing Group in 2023. Hosted by a KHG member and supported by contributions from councils and housing associations, RACE plays a crucial role in facilitating developments like ours. Their support has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

Looking Ahead

We hope this recognition inspires other communities to explore the potential of community land trusts and partnerships with organisations like English Rural. By working together, we can create sustainable solutions that keep rural areas vibrant and ensure local people can continue to live in the places they call home.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone involved in making this project a success:

  • The dedicated team at the Shepherdswell with Coldred Community Land Trust
  • The supportive members of the Kent Housing Group
  • Our partners and contributors at RACE
  • The residents of Shepherdswell and Coldred for their trust and collaboration
